Villa Romana Del Casale
There is no other place on earth with such a display of mosaics! We drove about 2 hours outside of polermo to visit one of the most well preserved remnants of the Roman Empire. A rich and powerful Roman built a sprawling villa here and ornamented it with 37000 square feet of exquisite mosaics. It is unknown who the owner was but it is believed from the mosaics that he was a senator and an importer of exotic animals. This villa is one of only a few Roman sites in Sicily. The reason it has survived is because of its remote location and because of a landslide that sealed off the area in 1300. It was hidden for 600 years and finally excavated in 1930 .
