Dublin

We walked out to the Kilmainham Gaol

They have a fascinating tour explaining the history of the jail which is synonymous with Irish history. We got a dramatic and realistic insight into what it was like to have been confined in one of these small dark cells. This gaol gives you insight into the disturbing and inspirational themes of modern Irish history. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916 were held here and shot by firing squad
The cells were small and at times held up to 5 prisoners. It was also a holding facility for prisoners prior to being sent to Australia. During the potato blite the census went from 1000 to 5000 prisoners because of the arrests for stealing food or committing a crime of any sort. For some, the crime was committed in order to get arrested for one meal a day and a roof over their heads.
On the way home from the gaol, we walked through Phoenix Park, said to be one of the largest and most beautiful parks in all of Europe? Include in the park, a fully restored castle, flowers, lakes and a Zoo. Then to the nearest pub to greatly enjoy seafood soup and some beer.
